Brownies - Birthday Post

Growing up, I've never spent a birthday without being in tears. The day is always full of self-pitying and self-self-self. By the time I reached 18 years old, I despised it. I hated making a big thing out of such a day.With facebook and iCloud and iCal, there are hundreds of people to wish birthdays to. Birthdays are no longer as "special" as it seems. 

Out of the 500 friends you have on facebook, how many times do you actually wish "Happy Birthday" genuinely? But even then, I still couldn't comprehend, why people thrive their hardest to make someone else's birthday so special. What if you don't get the similar effort in return? What if you end up being alone in the bathroom, in tears? 

Being such an extremist about this subject came with consequences. I was bound to be proven wrong. And I was. As though my whole view of birthdays were crushed. All of a sudden, I could comprehend, staying up for hours into the dawn to complete a project, taking out ingredients before the rooster's crow to bake. (Of course there was no roosters involved). But this goes to show that... there ARE people, you would be irrational for. Their smiles are already a sufficient gift in return. So, Happy 20th  Birthday to Yz! Thank you for being the person you are. I truly hope that I will not miss your next birthday and the birthdays to come. I wish that you stay smiling always :)

Now, onto the recipe. Many people love brownies. If they were any less sinful, it would be our staple food. However, there are a few types of brownies. Fudgy, Cakey and Chewy. You can tell from these pictures, the recipe I played around with resulted in a cakey/chewy type of brownies. However, there's good news. If you want it fudgy, just take them out of the oven earlier. However, if you want to go all out fudgy, I reckon you look for a different recipe :) (Personally, I'm the chewy type of brownie girl).

50g Flour
20g Oats (I opted oats instead of nuts for that Chewy bits)
45g Cocoa Powder
2g Baking Powder
110g Butter
120g Sugar
2 Eggs at room temperature
Vanilla Extract
150g Chocolate Chips

1. Preheat oven to 175 C
2. Combine Flour, Oats, Salt, Cocoa, Baking powder and Chocolate chips.
3. Cream butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.
4. Add Vanilla.
5. Add the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix just until incorporated.
6. Pour into desired (LINED) pan.
7. Bake for 20 minutes (if you want fudgey brownies) or 30 minutes (if you like cakey brownies)

  1. Ha, that's why I don't publish my birthday on Facebook and keep my contacts to people I actually know and like - I can use LinkedIn for "professional" stuff and keep FB for real friends. Those I actually care about know when my birthday is and I get a real, sincere "Happy Birthday" from them, instead of this hollow wall-spam every time my birthday ticks around!

    No-one makes me brownies though! Beautiful little squidgy cakes :)

  2. People always seem to come down on one side when it comes to brownies, but I pretty much love them in all shapes and forms - fudgy, chewy, cakey, chocolatey...they're all delicious! Yours look lovely, and the perfect birthday treat. Love the little chocolate buttons on top :-)

    I feel the same way about birthdays. I used to be all gung-ho about it, but now... I'm kind of not. It was actually one of my best friend's birthday today so I baked her cookies :D

  7. Love the idea of using (biscuit cutters?) to shape the brownies...brilliant. Chewy brownies are The best, always.

    (I've found other people's birthdays to be much more enjoyable than my own.) :)

    @ kyleen: I guess we learn not to anticipate too much. it in itself is a bit sad. But when we dont anticipate, we are thankful for what we actually do get.

    @ Valerie: Yup they're cookie cutters. You have to cut them while its hot. I didn't and hence, it came out untidy. I love chewy brownies as well. Until someone proves me wrong ;) I've found that usual hang-outs are more enjoyable than birthdays.

  12. I hadn't given it much thought, but you're right...birthdays and "Happy Birthdays" do mean a bit less with all of our media outlets. No one has to really go out of their way to wish someone a happy birthday.

    However, I want THESE on my birthday! YUM!

  15. Haha you are so funny about birthdays. My twin sister is the exact same way-- in fact, she despises how I love our birthday because apparently it "publicizes" it and draws unnecessary and unwanted fake attention to us, haha! I obviously am of quite a different character about this. :)

    It's also funny... I'm not sure what my preferences with brownies are. I like chewy, cakey and fudgy! Yours look beautiful to me!

  17. I LOVE cakey brownies! So I've already bookmarked this recipe.. and how great it is that you found a good friend that you baked these brownies for. I am kind of the same way about my birthdays. I hate it when people make a big deal out of it and think they HAVE TO get me a present or call me - Well, I guess I should be grateful that there are people who care... :)

  19. I similarly just do not like my birthday. There's too much expectation on me to be happy go lucky whatever...I just want a quiet normal day. That's what would make me happiest.
